Alcatraz known for military history
Alcatraz celebrated its very first living history day since opening as a National Park thirty-five years ago. What kind of history? Well, Civil War of course.
While Alcatraz is best known as an infamous, "super max" penitentiary, the island is actually a National Park because of its military history. It was the keystone fortification on the West Coast during the war. The twenty-five foot defensive walls that ringed the island gave it an ominous, medieval appearance.
